This week I learned that the brain is like a muscle; if you don't work out all summer, you lose what little strength you ever had. This has become very evident after my failure to complete an easy review sheet. The problem at hand is that I know I've done these problems in the past, I just can't remember how. Even some of the easy "solve for x" problems were throwing me off. I didn't struggle too much with graphing problems that dealt with intervals and such, so I guess I'm not a completely hopeless case. The questions over volume weren't too bad (after I got the formulas) either, and I think I did fine on the f of g problems. However, that was pretty much the extent of information that I could recall from last year. The whole process was pretty upsetting really. Like, at the start of the summer, my max bench press was 420 lbs. Similarly, I know I would've been able to finish this worksheet in about 4.20 seconds at the end of last school year. Unfortunately, I'm incapable of completing either of these tasks at the present moment. What I'm really struggling with is the process to simplify equations. I know most of the steps, I'm just not sure about the order. My basic algebra skills have taken a much bigger blow than my pre-calc skills. Anyway, I hope this miserable failure will (at some point) jog my memory. Relearning some algebra for the "find x" questions would definitely be beneficial. The most important lesson here is retaining a solid foundation on which a great building of calculus knowledge can be built :) |
